The president of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region called for the establishment of an independent Kurdish state, London-based pro-Saudi Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Wednesday.
In a statement released by his office, Masoud Barazani said a referendum should be held on the matter, since the time had come for Kurds to freely decide their fate. He stressed that this didn’t mean the immediate establishment of an independent Kurdistan. Instead, it would convey how the Kurdish people wished to determine their future, and the government would act on that desire “at the appropriate time.”
